BASICS

C= Sa, D= Ri, E= Ga,………..A= Da,…
12 keys, Distance between consecutive keys = half step, Sharps (after) and flats (before)

Scales

(In notations for ragas/scales, Letter Name cannot be repeated, so use a flat version)

1. Sankarabharanam or C major – C D E F G A B C
2. Natabhairavi or C natural minor – C D Eflat F G Aflat Bflat C
3. Keeravani or C harmonic minor – C D Eflat F G Aflat B C

[When you skip some notes and go up or come down within the raga, it is called aarohana and avarohana respectively]

Chords

A Chord is when you hit 3 or more keys at the same time. Chord = triad, when 3 keys are pressed together

Thumb = finger 1, index = finger 2, little=finger 5 (for right hand)
Reverse for left hand i.e little finger = finger 1

Chords in C Major/Sankarabaranam

To create a triad chord of any key, go 4 half steps first and then 3 half steps

  • Cmajor Chord: C1 E3 G5 (thumb on C)
    [Start at C, go 4 halfsteps to E, go 3 half steps to G]
  • Fmajor Chord: F1 A3 C5 (thumb on F)
  • Gmajor chord:1 3 5 (thumb on G)
  • Aminor chord: 1 3 5 (thumb on A)
    [we call it Aminor as we reduce the second note of the triad by half step, as that note is not in Cmajor scale]

Terms and notations Eg: The voices of C major triad are C E and G. C is the root note of the C major chord/triad. C is the tonic of C major scale. Progression means moving from chord to chord
Left hand used for harmony and right hand for melody

If you play, C E G, it is called root position C major chord
If you play, E G C, it is called C major chord in first inversion (C in higher octave)
If you play, G C E, it is called C major chord in second inversion (C, E in higher octave)

[Using left hand]Smooth voice leading => transition from one chord to another with minimal hand movement for smooth transition. This is done by using the inversion version instead of root position version of a chord.
Eg. C major to G major progression i.e GCE to GBD. Practice this loop. Then practice C G F major chords in loop. Also practice Fmajor to Bflat major (2nd inversion) progression.

Hindolam – sa ga ma da ni sa (C Eb F Ab Bb C , fingers131234)

To construct a major scale, you can use the formula, W-W-H-W-W-W-H. “W” stands for whole step and “H” stands for half step

  • Notes: B, C#, D#, E, F#, G#, A#, B
  • Fingerings (Left Hand): 4, 3, 2, 1, 4, 3, 2, 1
  • Fingerings (Right Hand): 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

(Thumb is finger 1, index finger is finger 2, middle finger is 3, ring finger is 4 and pinky finger is 5.)
